Punk Princess of the 2000s: Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne started her career in 2000 when she was only 16. The thing that makes Avril special is that even though her look hadn’t changed much throughout the years we listen to her, her music has gone through different paths and we listened to many genres from Avril’s voice.

After signing a two-album recording contract with Arista Records, Avril Lavigne released her debut album ‘Let Go’ on June 4th, 2002. Let Go peaked at #1 in the UK, Canada and Australia which was a great success for a young singer.

Under My Skin

As the second album of her contract, she released ‘Under My Skin’ (my favorite album of Avril btw) in May 25th, 2004. Some fans claimed that the singer who released Under My Skin was not Avril, instead she was a lookalike that replaced Avril Lavigne. The people who believe in this theory claim that she was struggling with her fame and she suicided in 2003.  The most significant proof of this theory was the clothes of Avril Lavigne, while she was wearing trousers, she changed her style and started to wear dresses and skirts. Also the fans believed that Melissa (the lookalike) left clues in her lyrics.

“The day you slipped away

Was the day I found it won’t be the same”

The Best Damn Thing

Her third album ‘The Best Damn Thing’ was the album that shows the little shifts in her music from alternative rock to bubblegum pop. ‘Girlfriend’ have peaked at #1 in the US and it was one of the biggest singles of the decade. Also it was the most-downloaded track in 2007.

In 2010, she also released the single ‘Alice’ for Disney.

Meanwhile, she was working on her 4th album, Goodbye Lullaby. After two years of recording, she released the album on March 2nd, 2011.

She announced that she started working on her next album ‘Avril Lavigne’ three months after releasing Goodbye Lullaby. The most outstanding song of this album was ‘Let Me Go’ which she released with her husband Chad Kroeger (the lead vocalist of Nickelback).

Also, there was a single that was released only in Japan, called ‘Hello Kitty’, which was inspired by her obsession of the brand.

After releasing her fifth studio album, Avril Lavigne took a 5-year break from music. In 2019, she released her latest album ‘Head Above Water’. The album is inspired by her battle against the Lyme disease. She described the album as her ‘emotional journey’. Because of the long break, her fanbase has weakened and nowadays, she doesn’t get the attention she deserve.

“Tell me it’s over

If it’s really over

‘Cause it don’t feel like it’s over

Whenever you’re closing the door, no

So tell me it’s over”
