Editor’s Reviews of Big 5 and the Netherlands

Before the rehearsals start, our editors write their review about Big 5 and host country, the Netherlands.

We rated each country out of ten and our four editors gave short comments about the songs. You can see the general ranking of Big 5 at the bottom.

On May 7th, we will publish our top 39!

🇫🇷 Barbara Pravi – ”Voilà”

Jade: This song is so beautiful; I love Barbara’s vocals and the song really shows off what a beautiful language French is. To describe it in a word it ‘Voilà’ is divine. 8.5/10

Ulaş: One of the best songs of this year. Beautiful story of a singer who is desperate but still has the power to stand up. While singing, you can clearly observe that Barbara feels the song, from her body language and voice. The fact that this song is sung in one of the most romantic languages in the world makes it much more sincere. Even though you do not understand French, you can feel the song and the story. 9.5/10

Alper: I get the shivers every time I listen to it. It feels as if Barbara transforms the lyrics into powerful emotions. 10/10

Semih: Her vocal is amazing and relaxing like her song. While Barbara sings her song, her facial expressions, and everything she does conveys the song to the audience very clearly. 8/10

🇩🇪 Jendrik – ”I Don’t Feel Hate”

Jade: At first I really didn’t like this song but Jendrik’s positivity has really won me over. I feel like this is a very divisive song with some loving it and others finding it annoying but I’m firmly in the enjoying it group now! 6/10

Ulaş: When I first listened to Jendrik’s song, I thought that there is a mistake and they unintentionally released their JESC song and put it in the bottom of my list. But after a couple of listenings, the song grew on me. I remember some mornings that I woke up singing this song. Fun song with positive vibes. 6.5/10

Alper: This one is really cute and fun. It somehow boosts my mood and I love the message given in the song. However, I think Jendrik has capacity to do so much better. 5/10

Semih: I was very prejudiced to this song at first, but now I listen with fun. Jendrik’s sincerity and fun takes the song to a different level. 6/10

🇮🇹 Måneskin – ”Zitti E Buoni”

Jade: I absolutely love that we have two really strong rock songs at Eurovision this year. But if I had to pick I’d say Italy is my favourite of the two, Måneskin’s harsh rock sound is just so incredible, and the vocals are so some of my favourite in the competition. 8.5/10

Ulaş: I usually love rock songs in Eurovision, but there is something that annoys me in this song. 5/10

Alper: Can please Italy participate with a bad song once? “Zitti E Buoni” has a high chance of finishing in top 10, just like the Italian entries came before it. 8/10

Semih: My clear favorite among the big five is Italy. I love their style. Although I am generally biased towards Italy’s songs, this one definitely deserves a good rank. 9/10

🇪🇸 Blas Cantó – ”Voy A Quedarme”

Jade: ‘Voy a quedarme’ is a perfectly nice song, and Blas’s vocals are absolutely wonderful. Sadly, the song just doesn’t stand out for me. 5.5/10

Ulaş: “Voy a quedarme” is the most underrated song of 2021. It was my pick in our earlier blog ‘Top Underrated Entries 2021: Editor Picks‘. It is brave of Blas to participate with a ballad after “Universo”. 7.5/10

Alper: I’m in love with Blas’s unique vocals. It feels so gentle, calming and also dramatic. I think “Voy A Quedarme” is so much better than his last year entry. I also love the meaning behind its lyrics. 8/10

Semih: Blas’s last years song, ”Universo” and ”Voy A Quedarme” are good songs but they are not enough for me. 4.5/10

🇬🇧 James Newman – ”Embers”

Jade: James Newman is incredibly talented and changing up his style musically compared to his 2020 entry ‘My Last Breath’ was a bold, exciting move that has paid off. ‘Embers’ is a lot of fun to listen to and it’s easily the best UK entry in years. 7/10

Ulaş: The song has a good and fun chorus but overall, it is not enough for Eurovision. I don’t think anyone will remember this song in the coming years. It’s definitely not my cup of tea. 3.5/10

Alper: A bop song from the United Kingdom? Hell yes! It’s not something was expected from the UK and it’s pretty good. However, this particular song may be lost among the others in the Grand Final. 5/10

Semih: I have no doubt that the song will do a great job on stage. It will definitely attract the audience. However, the song is not for me. 5/10

🇳🇱 Jeangu Macrooy – ”Birth Of A New Age”

Jade: I definitely preferred Jeangu’s song from 2020, so ‘Birth of a New Age’ is a little disappointing overall. However, the lyrics are some of my favourite this year as they are incredibly powerful 5.5/10

Ulaş: “Grow” was one of my biggest favorites last year. Thus, “Birth Of a New Age” is the greatest disappointment among the returning singers for me. It is such a shame that they wasted a great vocal with this mediocre song. 2/10

Alper: I like how this song inspiring, empowering and optimistic. It really has a nice message and I love hearing the ethnic tunes. However, it feels simple and I think Jeangu could do more than this. 4/10

Semih: I never expected a song like this after ”Grow”. This song really disappointed me. I do not hate it, but it is very inadequate for Eurovision. 2/10
