Eurovision is a song contest that unites lots of people from different countries and different cultures, hence various genres of music. Since 1956, we have seen thousands of songs.
Even if these songs had different genres, vast majority of them were pop songs. The prevalence of pop made it harder for others genres to be successful. Songs of unfamiliar genres did not usually get the attention they deserved. In this list, we compiled some rock songs that deserved to be much more successful.
France 2013 – Amandine Bourgeois – L’enfer et moi
For me, this is one of the greatest songs of France in Eurovision. Even though Amandine Bourgeois had great vocals, she finished 23rd because blues rock was unordinary and L’enfer et moi was the opening act of the final.
Finland 2007 – Hanna Pakarinen – Leave Me Alone
After the epic win of Lordi with Hard Rock Hallelujah in 2006, Finland sent a great rock song in 2007. Unfortunately, this masterpiece have finished in the 17th place. We had to ‘go crazy just to stay sane’ after seeing this result.
Montenegro 2016 – Highway – The Real Thing
As a fan of unique songs, I really wanted this song to qualify for the final. Before the semi-finals, The Real Thing was in the bottom 3 of almost everyone. They had a successful performance on stage. Even though it is loved by some fans after the live performance, it was not enough for them to qualify. They were 13th in their semi-final.
North Macedonia 2012 – Kaliopi – Crno i Belo
Best rock vocal of Eurovision ever. The best ethnic rock songs participated in the contest. Kaliopi finished 13th but she deserved way too much. Should’ve been in the top10.
Austria 2015 – The Makemakes – I Am Yours
A beautiful romantic ballad with rock vibes in it. After the win in 2014, the expectations were higher and these expectations had devalued this song too much. Obviously, it didn’t have the potential of a great success in the contest but definitely didn’t deserve to be the last with no points. However, the burning piano will always be remembered.
Ukraine 2017 – O.Torvald – Time
Another good song which is wasted because of high expectations. O.Torvald finished in the 24th place and became the worst Ukrainian entry in Eurovision.
Finland 2014 – Softengine – Something Better
Another great rock song from Finland. Had a good stage performance with a beautiful light show. They finished 11th and this is the most successful song in the list. Still, this song deserved something better.
Switzerland 2013 – Takasa – You And Me
This is the most pop-rock song I’ve ever heard. Such a cute song and a fun performance on stage. They finished 13th in their semi final but I think it should’ve been in the final at least.
The Netherlands 2018 – Waylon – Outlaw In ‘Em
My favorite song in Eurovision 2018. This is a masterpiece. It is as good as ‘The Calm After the Storm’ is, but unfortunately didn’t get what it deserved.
“Everybody’s got a little outlaw in ’em
Chrome piece hidin’ in their blacked out denim
Heartbeat beatin’ to a rock ‘n’ roll rhythm, yeah”
Turkey 2011 – Yüksek Sadakat – Live It Up
Turkish rock was always loved in the Eurovision. There were great rock songs such as For Real, Deli and We Could Be The Same. I think Live It Up is one of the songs that is wasted because of the previous year’s entry. In 2010, Turkey had sent one of the best rock songs of the contest’s history. After that success, Live It Up seemed as an average song and missed qualifying for the final with only 8 points, finished 13th in the semi final.
Georgia 2020 – Tornike Kipiani – Take Me As I Am
Would’ve been my favorite if Eurovision 2020 hadn’t cancelled. Might be the best song I’ve ever heard in Eurovision. It is just sad that we couldn’t listen to this song in live and won’t be able to listen to it on the Eurovision stage. The song has the perfect lyrics that explains everyone is beautiful with their own differences and everyone should be accepted as who they are.
“So tell me, why do you want me to smell like a French homme?
Oh, tell me why do you want me to play like a German?
Why don’t you want me to be just the way I am?
I guess you don’t love me
Why don’t you love me?”
Hungary 2017 – AWS – Viszlát Nyár
I couldn’t mention Viszlát Nyár in this list because it is a hardcore metal song. Since there is not enough songs to make a metal version of this list, I just wanted to mention this song as a bonus. At some point of the Eurovision period, this song was expected to be 36th in odds, but after the rehearsals, AWS started to climb and surprisingly qualified for the final with a difference of only 4 points. The song had deserved much more but finishing 21st is not bad for a metal song in Eurovision.
